Ad Hoc Committee

Report from Ad Hoc Committee to Study 4K-8 Grade Configuration

Six Recommendations:

1. Add modular units to Cottage Grove Elementary Schools to accommodate enrollment growth, as a temporary solution to a potential long-term problem.
Update: On 2/10/10 the administration said modular units were not needed at this time.  The Board will discuss it further at a future meeting.

2. Research 4K-8 programming in both communities. Report findings at a School Board Meeting by the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
Update: On 10/14/09 it was reported that Patti McGinnis was hired to study this option and a report would be made to the board in December or January.

On 12/22/09 Patti McGinnis presented the results of the 4K-8 in each community study.  There is a 121 page report on the district website.  First year costs are estimated to result in increased district expenses of approximately $1.1 million.  On-going costs are estimated to result in increased district expenses of $150,000-$200,000 depending on how many buses are needed.  The report will be placed on the Board agenda in January for action.

On 1/27/10 the Board agreed it was not feasible nor fiscally responsible to separate the education of 7th & 8th grade students.

3. Research sixth grade programming/curriculum. Report findings at a School Board Meeting by the end of the 2009-2010 school year. Temporarily keep sixth grade Monona students at Winnequah.
Update: On 2/10/10 the Board voted to continue middle school programming for the 6th grade, based on an administrative recommendation.  The Board will discuss the location of the 6th grade at a future meeting.

On 3/10/10 the Board voted to relocate the Monona 6th grade to Glacial Drumlin School for the 2010-11 school year.

4. Research 4K-4 grade schools at Taylor Prairie and Cottage Grove Elementary. Report findings at a School Board Meeting by the end of the 2010-2011 school year.

5. Maintain Winnequah and Maywood Schools until 4K-8 program in each community is determined, or until it is fiscally not feasible to operate both buildings.
Update: On 2/10/10 the administration recommended the consolidation of Maywood & Winnequah prior to the 2010-11 school year.  The Board requested additional information and will continue discussions at a future meeting.

6. Research real estate options district wide.
Update: The Board will continue to monitor this issue.
